(Tue, 16 May 2017) Roughly 70% of petroleum-fired electric generating capacity that still exists today was constructed prior to 1980. Utility-scale generators that reported petroleum as their primary fuel comprised only 3% of total electric generating capacity at the end of 2016 and produced less than 1% of total electricity generation during 2016.
Anyone looking for clues as to the direction of global oil demand would be well advised to count the number of electric bicycles dodging traffic in China’s streets.
(Mon, 15 May 2017) Exports of finished petroleum products from the Central Atlantic region of the United States (Petroleum Administration of Defense District, or PADD 1B) reached a record high in February 2017. Increased exports were driven by lower prices for several petroleum products in the Central Atlantic region compared with prices in other regions in the Atlantic Basin.
(Fri, 12 May 2017) Nuclear power currently accounts for about 20% of electricity generation in the United States, playing an important role in electricity markets. EIAâs 2017 Annual Energy Outlook (AEO2017) Reference case assumes that about 25% of the nuclear capacity now operating that does not have announced retirement plans will be removed from service by 2050.
(Thu, 11 May 2017) The generation fuel mix of electricity in the Northeast Census division of the United States shifted dramatically over the past ten years. In the nine Northeast states, natural gas nearly doubled its share of the region's total generation to 41% in 2016, up from 23% in 2006.
(Wed, 10 May 2017) Over the past 10 years, increased refining activity and relatively flat demand in the MidwestâPetroleum Administration for Defense District 2 (PADD 2)âhave allowed refiners in the region to meet a larger share of regional gasoline and diesel fuel needs.
(Wed, 10 May 2017) Miscellaneous Electric Loads (MELs) comprise a growing portion of delivered energy consumption in residential and commercial buildings. Miscellaneous end usesâincluding televisions, personal computers, security systems, data center servers, and many other devicesâhave continued to penetrate into building-related market segments. Part of this proliferation of devices and equipment can be attributed to increased service demand for entertainment, computing, and convenience appliances.
(Wed, 10 May 2017) Kazakhstan is a major oil producer. The countryâs estimated total petroleum and other liquids production was 1.698 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2016. Oil field development in Kazakhstan reached two milestones in 2016. In October 2016, Kashagan field resumed production after years of delays. In July 2016, the Tengizchevroil consortium made a final investment decision on a project to increase liquids production at the Tengiz field by about 260,000 b/d.
(Tue, 09 May 2017) As crude oil production in the Permian Basin of western Texas and eastern New Mexico has increased, pipeline infrastructure has also increased to deliver this crude oil to demand centers on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
