Working gas stocks top five-year average for the first time in two years

(Thu, 17 Oct 2019) Working natural gas stocks in the Lower 48 states totaled 3,519 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending October 11, 2019, 14 Bcf more than the previous five-year average, according to the <em>Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report</em> (WNGSR) released this week. Last week was the first time that Lower 48 states’ working gas stocks exceeded the five-year average since September 22, 2017. This deficit to the five-year average has been shrinking since mid-March, when it reached 556 Bcf.

Form EIA-923 Detailed Data File Energy Storage Update

This update includes a new worksheet containing fuel consumption, gross electricity generation, and net electricity generation data at the prime mover level for power plants with electric storage onsite.

Working natural gas storage capacity utilization reaches 80% or more in EIA’s three largest regions

(Fri, 04 Oct 2019) Weekly estimates of natural gas storage capacity utilization published on October 3, 2019, show the United States is at least 80% full in the three regions with the most working gas capacity—East, Midwest, and South Central non-salt, according to the latest EIA Natural Gas Storage Dashboard. These three regions accounted for more than 70% of the total working natural gas capacity in the Lower 48 states in 2018.

Working gas inventories see significant improvements this summer

(Wed, 18 Sep 2019) Working natural gas stocks in the Pacific region totaled 275 billion cubic feet (Bcf) as of September 6, 2019, according to the latest EIA <em>Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report</em> (WNGSR). Pacific region working natural gas inventories are now just 28 Bcf lower than the five-year average and 26 Bcf higher than the year-ago level. The deficit to the five-year average reached a recent low of 19 Bcf, during the week ending August 23— the smallest in the region since May 5, 2017.

U.S. Biodiesel Plant Production Capacity

(Fri, 13 Sep 2019) The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its annual biodiesel production capacity report. The new report contains data for all operating U.S. biodiesel plants as of January 1, 2019.

Hourly Electric Grid Monitor

(Wed, 21 Aug 2019) EIA launched a beta release of its new <em>Hourly Electric Grid Monitor</em>, a redesigned and enhanced version of the existing <em>U.S. Electric System Operating Data</em> website. The data come from Form EIA-930, <em>Hourly and Daily Balancing Authority Operations Report</em>, which collects hourly electricity demand, forecast demand, net generation, and interchange data from the electricity balancing authorities that operate the electric grid in the Lower 48 states.

Coal Transportation Rates to the Electric Power Sector

(Wed, 21 Aug 2019) In 2008 EIA began collecting the commodity cost of all coal delivered to power plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 50 megawatts or greater on the Form EIA-923, “Power Plant Operations Report.” Since EIA already collected delivered cost for the same shipments, a proxy for transportation cost is be calculated by subtracting one from the other.
