Using FY 2016 data sources, EIA assigns within-scope U.S. tax and direct expenditures to a set of discrete energy system categories. Most current federal subsidies support developing renewable energy supplies (primarily biofuels, wind, and solar) and reducing energy consumption through energy efficiency.
